Yamunotri History

Yamunotri is one of the four sacred shrines of the Himalayan Char Dham and the revered source of the holy Yamuna River. Situated at an altitude of about 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, who is worshipped as the giver of life, purity, and protection.
The temple is surrounded by snow-clad peaks, dense forests, and breathtaking mountain scenery, making it a place of both spiritual devotion and natural beauty. Although the actual source of the Yamuna River lies at the Yamunotri Glacier near the Bandarpoonch massif, the temple marks the sacred place where devotees offer prayers.
One of the unique attractions of Yamunotri is Surya Kund, a natural hot water spring where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes by tying them in a cloth. These are later offered to the Goddess as Prasad. Nearby is Divya Shila, a sacred rock that devotees worship before entering the temple.
Pilgrims usually begin the trek from Janki Chatti, covering about 5–6 km on foot. Pony, palki, and pithu services are also available for those unable to walk.
A visit to Yamunotri is believed to cleanse one’s sins, grant good health, and bless devotees with a peaceful and prosperous life. It is the traditional starting point of the Char Dham Yatra.

మంచుతో కప్పబడిన పర్వతాలు, పచ్చని అడవులు, స్వచ్ఛమైన ప్రకృతి మధ్య వెలసిన యమునోత్రి ఆలయం భక్తులకు ఆధ్యాత్మిక ప్రశాంతతను, ప్రకృతి అందాలను ఒకేసారి అందిస్తుంది. యమునా నది అసలు ఉద్భవ స్థానం యమునోత్రి హిమానీనదం (గ్లేసియర్) అయినప్పటికీ, ఆలయం వద్దే భక్తులు పవిత్ర స్నానం చేసి దేవిని దర్శించుకుంటారు.
ఇక్కడి ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణ సూర్యకుండ్ అనే సహజ వేడి నీటి ఊట. భక్తులు బియ్యం లేదా బంగాళాదుంపలను వస్త్రంలో కట్టి ఈ వేడి నీటిలో ఉడికించి, వాటిని అమ్మవారికి ప్రసాదంగా సమర్పిస్తారు. ఆలయంలోకి ప్రవేశించే ముందు దివ్య శిలను పూజించడం ఆనవాయితీ.
యాత్రికులు సాధారణంగా జానకీ చట్టి నుండి సుమారు 5–6 కిలోమీటర్లు కాలినడకన ప్రయాణించి ఆలయానికి చేరుకుంటారు. నడవలేని వారికి గుర్రాలు, పల్లకీలు, పీఠూ సేవలు కూడా అందుబాటులో ఉంటాయి.
యమునోత్రి దర్శనం ద్వారా పాపాలు తొలగి, ఆరోగ్యం, ఆయురారోగ్యం, శాంతి మరియు సౌభాగ్యం కలుగుతాయని భక్తుల విశ్వాసం. అందుకే చార్ ధామ్ యాత్రను సంప్రదాయంగా యమునోత్రి దర్శనంతోనే ప్రారంభిస్తారు.
