According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Lord Surya and the twin sister of the God of Death, Yamraj. In ancient times, sage Asit resided here, bathing daily in both the Ganga and Yamuna. As he aged, the Goddess Yamuna manifested as a small stream near his hermitage to allow him to continue his rituals uninterrupted. The temple complex is also home to Surya Kund, a hot spring that remains boiling even in the freezing cold. Priests cook raw rice in this thermal water as an offering, which is then distributed as Prasad. Visitors also worship Divya Shila, a sacred red rock, before seeking the blessings of Devi Yamuna.
