Gangotri – The Sacred Origin of the Ganga

Gangotri is one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand and is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is located at an altitude of about 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
According to Hindu tradition, King Bhagiratha performed intense penance here to bring the holy River Ganga from heaven to earth to liberate his ancestors. Lord Shiva received the mighty flow of the Ganga in his matted locks, allowing the sacred river to descend gently to Earth.
The beautiful Gangotri Temple was built in the 18th century and is visited by thousands of devotees every year. The actual glacial source of the Ganga is Gaumukh, about 18 km from Gangotri, where the Gangotri Glacier gives birth to the Bhagirathi River.
Surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan peaks, dense forests, and the crystal-clear river, Gangotri offers both spiritual peace and breathtaking natural beauty. The temple usually opens during Akshaya Tritiya and closes after Diwali, when the deity is ceremonially moved to the nearby village of Mukhba for the winter.

గంగోత్రి – పవిత్ర గంగానది జన్మస్థలం

గంగోత్రి ఉత్తరాఖండ్‌లోని చార్ ధామ్ యాత్రలో నాలుగు పవిత్ర క్షేత్రాల్లో ఒకటి. ఇది గంగాదేవికి అంకితమైన ప్రసిద్ధ ఆలయం. సముద్ర మట్టానికి సుమారు 3,100 మీటర్ల (10,200 అడుగుల) ఎత్తులో, భాగీరథి నది తీరంలో ఈ పవిత్ర క్షేత్రం ఉంది.
హిందూ పురాణాల ప్రకారం, భగీరథ మహారాజు తన పూర్వీకుల విముక్తి కోసం ఇక్కడ ఘోర తపస్సు చేయగా, గంగాదేవి స్వర్గం నుండి భూమికి అవతరించింది. ఆమె ఉధృత ప్రవాహాన్ని పరమశివుడు తన జటాజూటంలో ధరించి, మెల్లగా భూమిపై ప్రవహించేలా చేశాడు.
గంగోత్రి ఆలయం ప్రతి సంవత్సరం వేలాది మంది భక్తులను ఆకర్షిస్తుంది. గంగానది అసలు హిమనదీ మూలం గౌముఖ్, ఇది గంగోత్రి నుండి సుమారు 18 కి.మీ. దూరంలో ఉంటుంది.
మంచుతో కప్పబడిన హిమాలయ శిఖరాలు, స్వచ్ఛమైన భాగీరథి నది, ఆధ్యాత్మిక వాతావరణం గంగోత్రిని భక్తులకు మరపురాని అనుభూతిగా మారుస్తాయి. ఆలయం సాధారణంగా అక్షయ తృతీయ రోజున తెరుచుకుని, దీపావళి అనంతరం శీతాకాలం కోసం మూసివేస్తారు. ఆ సమయంలో అమ్మవారి ఉత్సవ విగ్రహాన్ని ముఖ్బా గ్రామానికి తరలిస్తారు.
